Nina’s story: how sound has enhanced my life

Nina is eight years old and in Year Four at school.

Learning how to play guitar is her latest pastime. Nina also enjoys gymnastics, swimming and performing arts.

Nina believes other young people would enjoy sound therapy too and so is keen to share her experiences.

New experiences

“I love trying out new things as you can discover something new that you like. And now I know that I really love sound therapy!

I liked the meditation about the light growing inside my heart and getting bigger and moving all around my body. It made me feel very relaxed and calm. I wanted to fall asleep! My body started to feel a little bit heavier too.

I really love how the sound feels on my body. The vibrations are amazing. The bowls make me feel very comforted and warm.

I even looked forward to Maths!

Being under the big drum is very different. It gave me more energy and I felt very alive!

After the second time, I did some drawing because I felt like doing some art. The next week at school, I was very excited about Maths. Usually I hate Maths!

I love the visions I have during the sound therapy. They feel very real too!  The first time, I was in a tunnel of sound and I saw pink and blue spirals spinning around. I felt very relaxed for ages after.

It’s relaxing, as well as energising

The second time, my favourite sounds were the chimes. When they were playing, I was in the jungle and I saw a cheetah. The cheetah asked me to follow her and I went behind a waterfall into this big cave. All the other animals were there. A horse, a tiger, a snake and the cheetah’s family. My baby cousin was there too. It felt like it was the animal’s secret lair.

I was also lying on a fluffy cloud in the sky. It felt really good. I was disappointed when I discovered that clouds are just air so this kind of makes up for it!

Seeing all these things makes me feel calm and wild at the same time. It’s weird. But a good kind of weird!”

I always feel very relaxed after sound therapy. It’s such a good thing to do after a hard week at school. Just what I needed. I’d love to do sound therapy every day.

I will tell all my friends to come and see you because you’re really good at it. You make everything comfortable and I feel very safe and looked after.

During two of the sessions, Nina had lots of twitching on her right side. When twitching occurs, this is usually an emotional release. Nina explained to me that she broke her collarbone on her right side when she was 6 years old so perhaps she was releasing trauma from that incident.

It’s wonderful that Nina is getting to experience this kind of nourishment now, and learning about the importance of self-care and mindfulness, which will hopefully continue into her adult life.

Thank you for sharing your story Nina!
