Embodied Writing: Finding Your Story Through Presence

Sound therapist in Bristol playing crystal singing bowls

As a sound therapist, I've been privileged to witness the transformation that unfolds when individuals reconnect with their bodies, releasing stories and traumas long silenced. Through sound—whether the gentle hum of a gong or the chimes of a singing bowl—I support people in getting back to their authentic selves.

Before my journey into sound therapy, I lived as an observer of my own life. My storytelling was external, narrating my traumas without truly feeling them. This observational stance was a barrier to the healing process, which requires feeling, processing, and releasing stored emotions to regain control.

The Practice of Presence

In both sound therapy and embodied writing, presence is everything. It's being in tune with the moment; with the sensations and emotions coursing through us. This presence allows for true healing, inviting us to listen deeply, honour our stories, and let go of what no longer serves us.

Healing Through Expression

The stories that emerge from this place of connection are powerful. They carry our experiences, emotions, and truths. In my workshops, a safe space is created for these stories to be expressed—a space free from judgment, where vulnerability is met with understanding and compassion.

Embodied writing has been a powerful tool for me to connect with the emotions stored in my pelvis, giving them a voice and allowing me to release them. It has also taught me to sit with the grief that arises. Through freewriting, I have been able to tap into the ancestral trauma in my mother's lineage, confronting the collective pain of generations of women who have struggled against oppression and control over their bodies and voices. This process has been challenging but deeply insightful, revealing my own resilience and the strength of my ancestors coursing through my veins.

From Vibrations to Words

My approach to embodied writing is informed by my sound therapy experience. I've discovered the power of truly listening—not just to the world around us but to the nuanced whispers of our own bodies.

This deep, embodied listening forms the heart of my approach to writing. It's a practice rooted in the belief that our bodies hold stories our chattering minds have never dared to tell.

Embodied writing is a profound shift from the mind's tendency to retell the same old stories, often shaped by past hurts and future anxieties. Instead, we listen to the body—a repository of emotion, memory, and intuition that speaks in sensations, impulses, and a wisdom all of its own.

In our workshops, we explore how to harness this wisdom.

We learn to quiet the mind and attune to the body's signals, crafting narratives that are not only empowering but also deeply authentic.

Navigating Inner Landscapes with Awareness

As we navigate our inner landscapes through writing, we're guided by the principles of presence and awareness. This means observing without judgment, listening without interruption, and writing without censorship.

Through this practice, we learn that our most potent stories are not those dictated by the mind but those felt in the pulse of our being.

A Welcoming Space for All

For those who may feel hesitant about attending due to fear of writing, self-doubt, or lack of experience, I want to emphasise that my workshops are designed to be welcoming and accessible to all. No prior writing experience is necessary. The focus is on the process of tuning into your body and letting the words flow freely, without judgment or concern for perfection. My role is to create a safe, supportive space where you can explore your inner landscape at your own pace, honouring your unique journey and voice.

The Sensory Experience

As we gather in the workshop space, you'll be invited to settle into the present moment, perhaps noticing the gentle scratching of pen on paper as we begin to write, or the soft ambient sounds that create a soothing backdrop for our exploration. You may feel a range of physical sensations and emotions arising as you give voice to the stories within. This is all part of the process—a sign that you are courageously showing up for yourself and your healing. Trust that whatever emerges is exactly what needs to be expressed in that moment

An Invitation

Sound therapist with drum

I invite you to join me on this journey.

Through my own evolution from a storyteller to a sound therapist, and back to writing with a newfound depth, I've seen firsthand how the principles of sound therapy can enrich the writing process.

By listening to my body, I've learned to listen to my stories in a new way, making my writing a richer, more intuitive expression of my inner world.

If you're seeking to connect deeply with your inner narrative, to find your authentic voice through the wisdom of your body, then this invitation is for you.
