A primary school student experiencing sound therapy to support their wellbeing

Sound therapy in school

By incorporating sound therapy into your curriculum, you can expect a multitude of benefits, including improved sensory integration, enhanced communication skills, increased self-regulation, and overall wellbeing.

With my background in informal learning, I have developed and facilitated numerous workshops for students, empowering them to explore and harness the power of sound. Through these workshops, students have experienced breakthroughs, expanded their horizons, and gained valuable life skills.

Here are some activities that can be tailored and modified based on the specific needs and abilities of your students.

  • This creates a serene and calming atmosphere to help students reduce stress. Students who tend to be hyperactive can discover a newfound sense of calmness, while those seeking an energy boost can feel revitalised and invigorated

  • By listening and responding to drumming, students can explore rhythm, coordination, and self-expression. It can also stimulate movement, boost energy levels, and encourage social interaction

  • Using recorded soundscapes and guided imagery techniques, I can take students on a sensory journey. This can enhance creativity, visualisation skills, and emotional wellbeing

  • Through sounding and group vocal toning exercises, students can explore their vocal capabilities. This can help improve speech and language skills, self-expression, self-confidence, and sense of unity within the group

  • Incorporating dance or movement activities alongside rhythmic soundscapes can encourage gross motor skills, coordination, and self-expression.

Outcomes for students

Sound therapy offers students a holistic approach to personal growth.

They'll experience a boost in confidence, self-esteem, and a newfound joy in healthy self-expression. By understanding the deep connection between body, mind, and emotions, students will foster self-awareness and acceptance. They'll grasp the positive effects of listening, breath, and movement on the nervous system, leading to emotional processing and a calmness.

The positive impacts of sound, coupled with meditation and mindful movement, enhance memory, concentration, and overall learning abilities. This journey with sound therapy will also ignite their creativity, encouraging them to explore creative outlets.

Practical techniques learned will empower students to manage stress and find inner peace, tools they can use at any moment. Furthermore, they'll refine their listening skills, attuning both to their inner voices and those of others, and cultivate the ability to stay present, reducing anxiety in the process.

It made me feel good that all the students on their own were very engaged with the experience. Emily and Ruth were very good and adapted the activities for everyone. It was a very beautiful surprise hearing all of the sounds. I wish students could have more opportunities for these sorts of experiences.”
