<image:caption>In Celtic folklore, Selkies are magical beings who live as seals in the sea but can shed their skins to become human on land. Though they may lose their skins and become trapped in human form, they never forget their true nature. When they reclaim their skins, they return to the sea, whole once more.</image:caption>

<image:title>Events - Coming home to your body: A Healing Journey for Women - Their story speaks to the power of reclaiming our true selves and finding harmony between our inner and outer worlds.</image:title>
<image:caption>Just as the Selkie carries the power to transform within their skin, you too possess an innate healing wisdom. This workshop will guide you to explore your own inner Selkie - that intuitive part of yourself that knows what you need to thrive and heal. Like the Selkie reclaiming their skin, you'll learn to access and trust your body's natural healing abilities, and connect with your inner compassionate wise elder to guide you on your healing journey.</image:caption>

<image:title>Events - Gaia Rhythm: Women's Drumming Circle - This is where women gather to remember what our bodies already know. At the Bristol Goddess Temple, we meet each month to drum, to sound, to move; weaving Celtic folklore and archetypes with somatic practice. The work shifts with the seasons, following the wheel of the year, but the core remains the same: creating space for women to feel, to express, to witness each other as we truly are.</image:title>

My body taught me what researchers like Bessel van der Kolk and Gabor Maté have known for decades: suppressed emotion doesn't disappear - it becomes illness. As Maté says, you can either learn to express your emotions, or your body will express them for you. 80% of us living living with chronic pain and autoimmune disease are women. We're dismissed, told it's in our heads, given psychiatric diagnoses when what we actually need is to be heard and to feel.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Ancestral Healing: Why grief & joy belong - When you work somatically with ancestral healing by grieving in your body, witnessing in your body, receiving ancient vitality in your body - the changes embeds differently. It's cellular memory awakening. Your body remembers what your mind was never taught. As Weller writes: "When you engage grief and suffering, it breaks the heart open to joy and delight." The grief work doesn't diminish you. It stretches you large enough to hold more - more feeling, more aliveness, more capacity for deep connection to life.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Women's Circles: Why “gentle” isn't always healing - When I say my circles are trauma-informed, I don't mean we tiptoe around difficult feelings. I mean we understand how the nervous system works. We know that healing happens when you can touch the wound and still feel your feet on the ground. When you can access the grief without drowning in it. We move slowly. We resource first. We establish what safety feels like in your body before we ask you to feel anything else. We work in layers. We don't go straight to the deepest wound. We build capacity. We practice touching something hard and then coming back to breath, back to sensation, back to the here and now. We gently expand your window of tolerance so you can feel more without being overwhelmed. This is how women grow their capacity to feel. Not by regulating away the difficult emotions, but by learning they can touch them and come back. Touch and return. Feel and resource.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Women's Circles: Why “gentle” isn't always healing - That's what ritual does in my circles. It signals transition. It tells your nervous system: we're entering sacred space now. Different rules apply here. You can let down the guard you carry in the world. You don't need to perform. You just need to show up. The space matters. The sensory experience matters. Not because it's nice to look at, but because your nervous system reads environment. When the space feels tended, your body can relax. When there's beauty and care in the details, it tells you: this is a place where you matter. Where your healing matters.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Women's Circles: Why “gentle” isn't always healing - There's something that happens when women come together in circle that is ancient and irreplaceable. Something your nervous system knows even if your mind doesn't. It's the experience of being witnessed. Of knowing you're not alone in your pain. Of hearing another woman voice her grief and realising yours isn't too much either.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Women's Circles: Why “gentle” isn't always healing - I'll never forget the first time I felt truly seen. It was about ten years ago. I'd got funding to join a leadership academy, back when I was still a senior manager. It was completely experiential, nothing like what I'd expected. There was a coach there and he saw me. Really saw me. It was the first time since I'd left Northern Ireland at eighteen that anyone had witnessed what it must have been like to grow up there. What it must have been like to carry all of that and still want to help people. I burst into tears because something was finally being acknowledged. Something I'd been holding for almost twenty years. And I felt my body listening. That's the thing about being held. Your body knows. It knows immediately whether it's safe to let go or whether it needs to brace. And most of us, especially women, have spent a lifetime bracing.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Women's Circles: Why “gentle” isn't always healing - Joseph Campbell mapped the hero's journey - the great mythic arc of departure, initiation, return. But it was Maureen Murdock who challenged that model and asked: what about women? Murdock was actually a student of Campbell's, and she'd been working with women in therapy who simply didn't fit his template. Women's journeys weren't linear. They spiralled. They circled back. They went deep into darkness and came back up again, changed. So Murdock developed her own map. And when she showed it to Campbell in 1983, he said: "Women don't need to make the journey. In the whole mythological tradition the woman is there. All she has to do is realise that she's the place that people are trying to get to." What he meant was that in mythology, the feminine is the destination. The hero journeys outward seeking something - and that something is often the goddess, the sacred feminine, the wholeness he's lost. In Campbell's view, women were already there. Already whole. Already the thing the hero was searching for.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Women's Circles: Why “gentle” isn't always healing - There's a massive problem in the wellness space and we need to talk about. We've built an entire culture around transcending our emotions. Around rising above. Around finding the lesson, the gift, the silver lining. Books like Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now have created a whole movement around the idea that if you could just stay present enough, mindful enough, you'd bypass all that messy feeling stuff entirely. And it's dangerous. Because it shames the very emotions that need to be felt. It tells women that their anger is a problem. That their grief is something to move through quickly. That rage and darkness and sorrow are signs they haven't done enough inner work. When actually, those feelings are the work.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - What to expect at a Women's Drum Circle in the Woods - We begin with feeling. I guide you to simply notice. Where are your feet connecting with earth? What's the quality of your breath? Where are you holding tension in your body - shoulders, jaw, belly, throat? This is somatic practice, which means we're working with what you actually feel in your body, not what you think you should feel. If you live with chronic pain like I do, you know how frightening it can be to actually feel your body. How disconnection becomes a survival strategy.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - What to expect at a Women's Drum Circle in the Woods - Each circle is aligned with where we are in the year's turning - the specific energy and wisdom this season offers. We work with fire because fire transforms. The flames receive what we're ready to release. The heat reminds us we're alive, we're here, we're allowed to take up space. And we work with ritual - simple, clear containers that create the conditions for something real to emerge.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Stone, Sound, and Altered States - From Stanton Drew to Bristol's Goddess Temple, Arnos Vale Chapel, and The Mount Without, I've been exploring how stone amplifies consciousness. How archaeoacoustics confirms what Celtic shamanic wisdom has always known. Why I love facilitating sound journeys in sacred stone spaces. This is a journey through time. From a wee girl making sounds at a neolithic burial site to singing in Newgrange's chamber. From studying medieval architecture across Europe to bringing crystal bowls into some of Bristol's oldest buildings. From body knowing to scientific confirmation. It's a long read because the story spans millennia.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The invisible trauma of war survivors - I spent my childhood in Northern Ireland during the conflict of the 70s, 80s, and 90s, navigating daily violence, bomb scares, and sectarian tension. I now live in England, working in holistic healing, but I carry scars you can’t see. Scars that most people here don’t understand or recognise. Like thousands of others from these generations, I’m living proof of what happens when we fail to properly support conflict survivors.</image:title>

<image:caption>Milltown Cemetery, Belfast. In 1988, mourners at an IRA funeral were attacked by a loyalist gunman called Michael Stone, killing three people. Days later, at the funeral of one of his victims, two British soldiers who accidentally drove into the procession were killed. For some of us, this was the reality of growing up here. Violence could unleash in any setting. The graves hold the dead, but trauma from incidents like this lives on in families who witnessed such violence, passed down to children who learned that nowhere was entirely safe.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Family photographs holding untold stories. What you can't see in these images is how trauma travels not just through the stories that get passed down, but through the silences, and the incidents that were too painful to ever speak about. Children absorb their parents' hypervigilance, their unexplained fears, their ways of moving through the world, long before they understand why. The body remembers what the mind tries to forget, and passes that memory forward through generations.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - From Disconnection to embodiment: One Woman's journey through circle work - I'm honoured to share Libby's story in her own words about her unexpected journey home to herself. Her experience speaks to something so many women are living with - a disconnection from our bodies that we don't even realise exists until we begin to find our way back. This story, from our Selkie women's circle, illustrates the profound transformation possible when women gather to reclaim lost parts of themselves through ancient wisdom and embodied practices - the same depth of work we explore at our Bone Deep Women's Circles.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - From Disconnection to embodiment: One Woman's journey through circle work - I learned that in Celtic mythology, Selkies are seal-women who can shed their seal skins to become human. But sometimes they lose their skins, becoming trapped on land, disconnected from their true nature. During this women’s circle, we explored this mythology through embodied practices - movement, breathwork, sound healing and somatic exercises that helped us reconnect with our bodies. We worked in circle with other women, sharing stories and witnessing each other's journeys. There was time for reflection, creative expression, and gentle body-based practices that helped us remember what we'd forgotten about ourselves.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - From Disconnection to embodiment: One Woman's journey through circle work - Every single part of the experience resonated with me in ways I never expected. The biggest revelation hit me right away: I realised I had been living like a Selkie who had lost her skin, disconnected from my essential self. I had been very disconnected from my body for most of my adult life. It was like rediscovering an essential part of me that had been sadly long forgotten. I never understood before how completely cut off I was from my own physical self. I had been living like someone who goes to a beautiful beach only to complain about the sand. Every month, I moaned about my period, never once thanking my body for allowing me to fall pregnant on demand, have healthy pregnancies, and produce beautiful children with no unwanted medical intervention.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Shamanic drum journey experiences: What really happens? - "I saw myself in a completely different landscape" Journeying often takes us to other worlds - lush forests, ancient temples, childhood homes, or places that exist only in the realm of spirit. These landscapes reflect inner states and often hold keys to our healing. "Strange symbols or images kept appearing" Your unconscious mind speaks in symbols. A locked door might represent opportunities you haven't yet opened. Water could signify emotional healing or cleansing. Fire might indicate transformation or creative energy ready to emerge.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Art of holding Space - As the Learning and Access Officer at the Lace Guild, I had developed a travelling exhibition to bring this traditional craft to "hard to reach" audiences. Despite battling IBS (which I now understand was my body's way of processing unresolved trauma), I navigated the public transport system carrying these delicate materials to places to new audiences. I'll never forget walking into that teenage pregnancy unit for the first time. Their skepticism felt like ice - eyes rolled, arms crossed, bodies turned away. My carefully planned workshop suddenly felt irrelevant. Instead of pushing forward with my agenda, I set the lace aside and simply began asking questions, listening to their stories, and meeting them where they were.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Art of holding Space - The program was so successful that the headmistress invited me back long after the funding had ended. What had begun as a craft workshop had transformed into something closer to meditation - a healing space where young women could escape the chaos of their circumstances and find moments of peace within.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Art of holding Space - At Thinktank Science Museum, I watched families making medieval remedies with pestle and mortars in a workshop I had developed on medieval medicine. Parents and children leaned in together, crushing herbs and creating ointments just as people had done daily centuries before. The activity was so engrossing that our twenty-minute workshop stretched to forty, with no one noticing the time passing. One grandmother, so immersed in the experience, began tasting the herbs without prompting, her curiosity completely natural and uninhibited.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Art of holding Space - The true power lies in the sacred container of community and that resonance that amplifies individual experience into collective wisdom. <image:title>Blog - The Art of holding Space - By the end of the session, previously silent students were leading discussions, forming connections, and engaging with complex topics on their own terms. But rather than lecturing about these traditions, I weave their essence into immersive experiences that women can feel and embody directly. Guided meditations open doorways to personal connection. Embodied listening practices help women discover wisdom through their senses. This immersive approach transforms how women relate to wisdom traditions. Instead of learning about something, they experience it firsthand. Seasonal energies, folklore, and sacred practices become alive and personally meaningful, integrated through physical sensation and emotional resonance rather than merely understood intellectually.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Art of holding Space - One memorable moment came during a tense rebrand negotiation at the Soil Association. <image:title>Blog - How women's drum circles are supporting my healing journey - There was this moment in our women's drumming circle when everything seemed to break loose. The collective rhythm we'd been building suddenly scattered, and I couldn't find the beat anymore. I initially felt anxious and felt the need to bring the chaos under control. My hands automatically tried to establish a steady rhythm to guide everyone back.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - How women's drum circles are supporting my healing journey - Physically, the chemo team was fixing me, but mentally, my state was declining. No, it wasn't going to happen.</image:title>

<image:caption>I birthed my drum in the garden at Summer Solstice. Unable to afford a commercial drum or workshop, I researched the process through YouTube videos and Facebook groups, gathering materials and knowledge. The ceremony of creation was as important as the drum itself. When my first attempt wasn't quite right, I gave it a "rebirth" by soaking and remaking it. From the leftover skin, I created a smaller drum that I lend to newcomers. Later, I made a drum for my mother-in-law Marilyn as a Christmas gift, crafting it during Winter Solstice. Our drums were birthed at opposite points on the celtic wheel of the year.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How women's drum circles are supporting my healing journey - This "new me" is calm, content with life, and taking forward the positive lessons gained over the last few years. My concentration is better at work. With the ADHD brain, focus can be an issue, but it's definitely better in the days after drumming. And it's a calm focus, not that pressured focus. It feels like I can deal with life, and it's all okay. With each session, I see more of this new me appearing, and it feels incredible! I can't measure what Ruth has done for me - it's the therapy I didn't know I needed.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - How women's drum circles are supporting my healing journey - The times when you think, "Should I go to the drumming circle? Will I benefit when I'm not in the right mindset?" Those are precisely the times when you need it most. So many times I've heard someone say, "I was so tired tonight I didn't think I could get myself here." Inevitably, those were the times they got the most benefit. It's become what I turn to when I need to centre myself. If I'm getting stressed with something, I'll put down what I'm doing and play the drum for a while as it shifts me into a different headspace. The effect is immediate. I feel calmer and more grounded, even after just 5 minutes.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Shamanic drum medicine: Awakening ancestral joy - As someone who has moved from experiencing drums as symbols of division in Northern Ireland to discovering their profound healing power, I understand the journey from ancestral pain to joy intimately. Through my own experience with chronic pain and fibromyalgia, I've discovered that the drum doesn't just ease physical suffering - it awakens a deep remembering of joy that lives in our bones. In my own drum journeys, I often connect with an ancient medicine woman through the land. She comes from pre-agricultural times, bringing with her a strength and wisdom that predates our modern separations from earth and body. Through her presence, I feel a courage that helps me transform my recent ancestral patterns. She reminds me that this healing wisdom has always been here, waiting in the land, in our bones, in the drum's rhythm.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Why Women's Circles are more important than ever - We live in a world that asks us to be smaller than we are. To be quieter. More contained. The voice of self-judgment mirrors society's demands that we diminish ourselves to fit in. But deep within, something is stirring. A remembering. A rebellion. Women are gathering once again in sacred circles, not as a luxury, but as a necessity. Not as a trend, but as a reclamation. In these spaces, we don't just heal ourselves; we heal our lineages.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Why Women's Circles are more important than ever - And then I found the drum. Or perhaps more accurately, the drum found me. In her rhythm, I discovered a different kind of language. One that speaks not in "shoulds" but in heartbeats. One that doesn't demand perfection but invites presence. The drum became my gateway back into my body - not as a project to be improved, but as a sacred home to be inhabited.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Why Women's Circles are more important than ever - What I've discovered, as I've shared this journey with other women, is how desperately we all need this homecoming. In our circles, something magical happens. Women arrive carrying the weight of endless expectations, of patterns learned to numb and survive - the drinks after work, the endless scrolling, the pushing through pain. But here, in the safety of sacred space, we find a different way. Together, we practice the art of conscious healing. Not suppressing our pain or temporarily escaping it, but witnessing it with compassion. We learn to observe our patterns, to make space for both our grief and our joy, to move through rather than around our healing.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Why Women's Circles are more important than ever - After our last circle, I felt my Nana's presence wash over me. Usually when I feel her, it's through my body's holding patterns - my left shoulder rising, my right hip dropping, mirroring how she carried herself. But this time was different. This time she was vibrant. Joyful. Free. She worked in a shirt factory in Northern Ireland, raising three children while her alcoholic husband spent their money. Like so many Irish women before and after her, she carried the weight of generational martyrdom - that deep pattern of giving everything away, of putting everyone else first until there was nothing left for herself.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Sound Therapy: Healing Trauma from Northern Ireland's Conflict - For those of us living through it, the impact was soul-deep and inescapable. It didn't just shape our understanding of safety or normalcy - it rewired our entire perception of reality. Every loud sound, every stranger, every misplaced object became a potential threat. It was a world where hypervigilance wasn't just a survival skill, it was a way of life.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Sound Healing: A Client's Journey - I first met Ruth at a drumming circle she holds, and immediately liked her energy, she's warm and affable and just makes everyone really welcome. She's naturally curious, and happy to share her knowledge, and during one conversation we spoke about how she uses Tibetan singing bowls to get direct feedback on the energy of each chakra in her sound healing work.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Sound Healing: A Client's Journey - Ruth is confident working with a range of clients, with differing levels of knowledge and experience in giving or receiving healing work, so she adapts her approach to suit the individual. <image:title>Blog - Sound Healing: A Client's Journey - The sessions themselves are beautiful, the room is cosy, Ruth takes time to get you settled, and allows time to talk if stuff comes up, so the aftercare should you need it is there. Prior to working with Ruth, I'd attended group sound healing and found them enjoyable as a shared experience, it's nice to connect with others.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Science behind Shamanic Drumming - At the heart of shamanic drumming are two fundamental rhythms: the mother beat and the father beat. The mother beat is slow and steady, like a heartbeat, inviting us to turn inward and connect with our own inner wisdom. The father beat is fast and dynamic, calling us to action and outward expression [1]. When these rhythms are woven together in a shamanic drumming session, they create a powerful journey of transformation.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Science behind Shamanic Drumming - Studies now show that specific drumming tempos can change our brainwave patterns [2], guiding us into relaxed and even dreamlike states [3]. In these altered states of consciousness, we can access heightened creativity, insight, and emotional release [4]. Drumming has also been found to reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure, boost the immune system [5], [6], and even alleviate chronic pain [7].</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Science behind Shamanic Drumming - This interplay of high and low frequencies creates a neuroacoustic experience that is both energising and calming, awakening and grounding. As the various instruments weave in and out, they guide the brain through a dynamic journey, stimulating different areas and fostering a sense of wholeness and integration (9).</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Science behind Shamanic Drumming - In a shamanic drum journey, you might find yourself floating on the ethereal notes of a flute one moment, and then pulsing with the earthy rhythms of a drum the next. You might feel the tingle of a rattle dancing up your spine, or the deep vibrations of a bowl resonating in your belly. Each instrument brings its own medicine, its own unique way of moving and shifting energy.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Healing in My Bones: The Wisdom of the Land & the Power of Celtic Tree Lore - This deep connection to the land ran through generations of my family. My father and grandfather defended their lands from fox hunts and stood by their beloved animals, even when it was time to sell them. Sometimes the cows didn't go to the slaughter house. And then there were the stories. The tales of fairy trees standing sentinel in the fields, guardians of grain and old Celtic magic. This legacy of tree lore became a shared language as these tales helped me feel connected to each tree, knowing its story.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Healing in My Bones: The Wisdom of the Land & the Power of Celtic Tree Lore - Growing up with this love for nature instilled in me, I have come to understand that true wisdom comes from learning from nature, not just about it. In our modern world, we often fall into the trap of seeing nature as something separate from ourselves – an object to be studied, controlled, or exploited. But as shamanic traditions have long recognised, we are an integral part of the natural world, and our well-being is deeply intertwined with the health of the earth.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Healing in My Bones: The Wisdom of the Land & the Power of Celtic Tree Lore - My Dad’s passing in 2017 left a void, but in the woods, I sense his presence, walking beside me. In his last days, the sight of trees from his window brought him peace. This series of Celtic Tree Moon sound baths is my way of honouring him, my Granddad, Dugald, and my other ancestors, and their deep bond with the land. Through these immersive experiences, we create a sacred space for personal and collective healing to unfold. As we journey through the energy of each tree month, we access the ancient wisdom of nature and plant the seeds for a more compassionate and resilient world.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Reclaiming the Sacred Womb: Hildegard of Bingen's Legacy - Her visionary writings shattered the prevailing notions of her era, offering a radical vision of feminine power and spirituality that continues to resonate with women today. Hildegard's insights would take on a deeply personal meaning for me as I navigated my own journey with endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). In this blog, we'll explore Hildegard's visions of the womb, trace their roots in ancient shamanic traditions, and discover their relevance for contemporary spiritual practices. Along the way, we'll also uncover the broader context of medieval medical concepts and literary representations of the womb, shedding light on the complex cultural landscape that was the backdrop for Hildegard's radical ideas.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Reclaiming the Sacred Womb: Hildegard of Bingen's Legacy - Similarly, in the 13th-century poem Le Roman de la Rose, the character Nature laments the unruly nature of the womb, describing it as a "gluttonous beast" that constantly demands to be fed with sexual pleasure. [3] These literary examples demonstrate how the wandering womb theory not only shaped medical practice but also informed cultural attitudes towards women's bodies and sexuality. The concept of the wandering womb was not limited to medical texts and literary works; it also found expression in medieval art. In the 13th-century Rutland Psalter, a marginal illustration depicts a womb as a separate entity, with a face and a serpentine body, being chased by a physician wielding a rod. [4] This image reflects the prevailing notion of the womb as an unruly, rebellious creature that needed to be tamed and controlled.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Reclaiming the Sacred Womb: Hildegard of Bingen's Legacy - This connection between women's bodies and the earth is further elaborated in Hildegard's vision of the universe as a great cosmic egg, with the earth at its centre, surrounded by the planets and the stars. This egg, she explains, is like a womb, nurturing and sustaining all of creation. [7] By linking the womb to the generative power of the earth and the cosmos, Hildegard imbues it with a sacred significance that transcends the biological and enters the realm of the spiritual.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Reclaiming the Sacred Womb: Hildegard of Bingen's Legacy - Mechthild, a 13th-century German mystic, described the womb of the Virgin Mary as a sacred chamber, a "golden temple" where the divine and human meet. [8] For Mechthild, the womb was not just a physical space, but a spiritual realm of transformation and grace.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Reclaiming the Sacred Womb: Hildegard of Bingen's Legacy - Similarly, Julian of Norwich, a 14th-century English anchoress, used the imagery of the womb to convey the nurturing, protective love of God. In her Revelations of Divine Love, Julian wrote, "Our Savior is our true Mother in whom we are endlessly born and out of whom we shall never come". [9] By likening God's love to that of a mother's womb, Julian challenged traditional gender roles and affirmed the sacred power of the feminine.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Reclaiming the Sacred Womb: Hildegard of Bingen's Legacy - Hildegard's visions of the womb as a cosmic egg and a gateway between worlds bear a striking resemblance to these shamanic practices. Like the shaman entering the cave-womb, Hildegard's visionary journeys took her into the depths of the universe, where she encountered the divine feminine in all its power and mystery. Her descriptions of the womb as a nurturing, generative space also echo the shamanic understanding of the earth as a great mother, constantly birthing and sustaining life.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Reclaiming the Sacred Womb: Hildegard of Bingen's Legacy - Hildegard's visions, with their vivid imagery of the womb as a cosmic egg and a source of divine creativity, seem to tap into this ancient well of goddess wisdom. Her concept of “viriditas”, the greening power that animates all life, bears a striking resemblance to the life-giving energy of the goddess, often represented in ancient art and mythology as a green, fertile force. [12] While we cannot know for certain the extent to which Hildegard was directly influenced by these ancient shamanic and goddess traditions, her visions nonetheless suggest a deep connection to these timeless ways of knowing.</image:title>

This passion eventually led me to earn a research degree and have the privilege of teaching courses on "Medieval Women and Gender" and "Medicine and the Black Death" at the University of Glasgow. <image:title>Blog - From Academia to Healing: Reconnecting with Medieval Women Healers - Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179), a visionary Benedictine abbess, made significant contributions to medieval medicine and spirituality. Her holistic approach combined knowledge of herbs, stones, and foods with mystical insights, as documented in her medical text Causae et Curae. Hildegard wrote about women's health issues, offering advice on menstruation, conception, and childbirth. She believed in the "greening power" (viriditas), a life force particularly strong in women, connecting them to nature and the divine. Hildegard's visions often featured the womb as a sacred space, reflecting the diverse practices and enduring wisdom of medieval women healers. [1]</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - From Academia to Healing: Reconnecting with Medieval Women Healers - Marie de France's Eliduc tells the story of Guildeluec, who discovers the seemingly lifeless body of her lover, Guilliadun. Guildeluec witnesses a female weasel revive her seemingly dead weasel companion by placing a red flower in their mouth. Inspired by this, Guildeluec places the same flower in Guilliadun's mouth, bringing him back to life. This story beautifully demonstrates the power of traditional knowledge passed down from woman to woman, and the deep connection between nature and healing that these wise women understood so well. Although she is not directly mentioned in the Bible, her story is found in the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James, a text dating back to the 2nd century AD. The image beautifully illustrates the crucial role that midwives played in medieval society as guardians of women's health and childbirth. <image:title>Blog - Embodied Writing: Finding Your Story Through Presence - As a sound therapist, I've been privileged to witness the transformation that unfolds when individuals reconnect with their bodies, releasing stories and traumas long silenced. Through sound—whether the gentle hum of a gong or the chimes of a singing bowl—I support people in getting back to their authentic selves. Before my journey into sound therapy, I lived as an observer of my own life. My storytelling was external, narrating my traumas without truly feeling them. This observational stance was a barrier to the healing process, which requires feeling, processing, and releasing stored emotions to regain control.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Embodied Writing: Finding Your Story Through Presence - My approach to embodied writing is informed by my sound therapy experience. I've discovered the power of truly listening—not just to the world around us but to the nuanced whispers of our own bodies. This deep, embodied listening forms the heart of my approach to writing. It's a practice rooted in the belief that our bodies hold stories our chattering minds have never dared to tell. Embodied writing is a profound shift from the mind's tendency to retell the same old stories, often shaped by past hurts and future anxieties. Instead, we listen to the body—a repository of emotion, memory, and intuition that speaks in sensations, impulses, and a wisdom all of its own.</image:title>

By listening to my body, I've learned to listen to my stories in a new way, making my writing a richer, more intuitive expression of my inner world. If you're seeking to connect deeply with your inner narrative, to find your authentic voice through the wisdom of your body, then this invitation is for you.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Ritual in Healing - It was during this shadow work experience that I truly felt the therapeutic power of rituals.</image:title>
<image:caption>Previously, my understanding of rituals was clouded by negative associations with religious mandates. Until this time, rituals felt like rehearsed routines, lacking depth. But in that moment, I had an insight and clarity, feeling a deep connection to all the different parts of myself - those I had long hidden from the world. It was freedom, it was connection, it was... me.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A room full of individuals, each on their unique journey, yet united in intention and purpose, is powerful. The collective energy, the shared vulnerability, the mutual support – it's really something else. The act of coming together, bearing witness to each other's stories, and taking part in a shared ritualistic experience fosters deep healing and connection.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Ritual in Healing - With dedication, I began a simple 10-minute daily ritual.</image:title>
<image:caption>Each morning, before the world could make its demands, I'd find a quiet spot, often in nature, and play my drum and chant, before starting to journal. I'd write down three skills or talents I was grateful for that day. Some days, it was my ability to hold space and for people to feel at ease in my presence, other days it was my knack for creating soothing soundscapes in my therapy sessions. With each entry, I wasn't just acknowledging a skill; I was silencing that inner critic, diminishing its hold on me.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Ritual in Healing - Over the last couple of months, I began to feel an acute pain in the back of my heart space, which manifested as a hump in my upper back.</image:title>
<image:caption>This physical discomfort, I realised, was a manifestation of my younger self to protect the empathetic healer in me, a role that had been exploited during my childhood. The shadow ritual illuminated this protective mechanism and helped me understand that I could embrace my healer's role without draining my own energy. With this newfound clarity, I turned to my singing bowls, channeling their healing vibrations to address the trauma anchored in that space. Over a couple of solo sessions, I experienced a visceral, physical release, as if layers of pent-up emotions and memories were unfurling, allowing my upper back to open and realign.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Releasing trauma through sound therapy - A Personal Connection to Sound Healing</image:title>
<image:caption>My journey with sound therapy has been deeply personal, as well as experiential. After suffering from chronic pain for 13 years, my shamanic drum unintentionally became the antidote to my pain. I’d wake up in agony, but after just 10 minutes of drumming, I’d receive the medicine I needed to function and get on with my day. Not only did the drum recalibrate my body during those excruciating times, but she also taught me about myself and supported me in releasing trauma that had been stuck in my body for decades.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Releasing trauma through sound therapy</image:title>
<image:caption>A chance encounter with a gong bath made me realise the deep connection I felt with sound healing. While I've undergone formal training and am a qualified sound therapist, my most profound lessons in sound therapy came from my personal healing journey. Instead of relying solely on textbooks or teachings, I deeply tuned into the sounds and their resonance within me. Each sound, each vibration, helped me heal and understand myself a bit more. After years in charity communications, I felt a pull to help others in a different, more personal way.</image:caption>

The pain, fatigue, and other symptoms are manifestations of a nervous system holding onto old stories and traumas. But through sound therapy, movement, and singing, I began to retrain my nervous system. These practices helped me release the old narratives my body clung to and find a renewed sense of connection and safety within myself.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Sound therapy's role in nervous system regulation: Polyvagal Theory explained - The Vagus Nerve: A bridge to calm</image:title>
<image:caption>The vagus nerve, a critical component of the polyvagal theory, acts as a bridge between our brain and major organs. It plays a significant role in determining which state our body should be in. Sound therapy, especially through resonant frequencies, can stimulate the vagus nerve, helping shift the body from a fight or flight state to a state of social engagement or relaxation.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The logical, chattering left side of my brain simply... vanished. A connection sparked within me, a link to ancient wisdom, resonating through the crystalline structure of my bowls. This wisdom compelled me to chant in a voice that was both familiar and mysterious, a voice from a timeless place; an omnipresent truth. There was no thinking, just being. An ancient truth, housed in a vessel born of modern technology. A paradox, isn't it?</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Crystal Singing Bowls: From Silicon Valley Tech to Healing Sounds - When the bowls arrived, life had thrown a curveball.</image:title>
<image:caption>A fellow sound practitioner had been knocked off his bike on the same day we were due to deliver a sound bath. His ribs were damaged and his mobility was compromised. The bowls, fresh out of their package, were called to duty. Three crystal singing bowl sound therapy sessions later, his recovery was progressing at an astonishing pace. Could it be that the crystal bowls have a unique resonance with our skeletal system, aiding in healing? I can't help but wonder. The power of the bowls, however, extends beyond physical healing. Working with my clients, I've witnessed trapped trauma surfacing and flowing out through the vibrations of the bowls. The sound waves move through the body, seeking out the hidden knots of emotional pain and gently unwinding them, until they are expelled from the body.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Power of Harmonics: A Journey From Pythagoras to Aphex Twin - Picture a stone thrown into a calm pond. The splash creates a central, powerful wave – this mirrors the primary sound, or fundamental frequency, we hear.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Power of Harmonics: A Journey From Pythagoras to Aphex Twin - Tell a story: Drawing inspiration from the way these artists narrate through sound, I use this approach to guide participants on a healing journey at a sound bath.</image:title>
<image:caption>Employ silence: Silence can serve as a powerful tool. Like these artists, I use it to punctuate sound therapy sessions and sound baths, allowing participants to absorb and reflect on their experiences. Continue learning: As these composers' works evolve, so too must my practice. I am always reading new research and techniques in the field which enhances my sessions.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A significant part of Ireland's allure lies in its wild and untamed countryside and coastlines. As a child, whenever I visited these places, I found myself irresistibly drawn to their raw, natural beauty. It was as if the wildness of the land was speaking directly to my soul, resonating with a deep, unspoken part of me.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Healing Ancestral Trauma through Sound and Ritual - My Nana, a woman of strength and grace, lived a life marked by service and sacrifice.</image:title>
<image:caption>She was a seamstress and a baker, her hands weaving dreams into each stitch and kneading love into each loaf. Yet, she was confined within the walls of her home, her spirit oppressed by the weight of her alcoholic husband's needs. The teacups she held were symbols of her confined life, her dreams poured into them, only to cool and remain untouched.</image:caption>

<image:caption>She dreamed of becoming a mechanic, and then of studying geology at Trinity in Dublin. But her dreams were deemed too bold, too un-lady like. Instead, she was handed the teacups, a silent reminder of the life she was expected to lead. She defied expectations, her spirit too strong to be confined. She fought her way to teaching college in Belfast, her teacups remaining untouched, a symbol of a life she refused to accept.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Healing Ancestral Trauma through Sound and Ritual - Sound has a profound ability to heal and transform. It can reach into the deepest parts of our being, resonating with our internal frequencies, releasing stored traumas, and restoring harmony. I have a set of Tibetan singing bowls, each attuned to a different chakra within the body.</image:title>
<image:caption>One day, I was particularly drawn to the bowl associated with the sacral chakra. The sacral chakra, located in the lower abdomen, is the centre of our emotions, creativity, and sexuality. It embodies our ability to connect with others and accept new experiences. It's also where we often store trauma, particularly trauma related to oppression and suppression of our feminine nature.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Healing Ancestral Trauma through Sound and Ritual - In my community, we were expected to align ourselves with a British identity, to fly the Union Jack and pledge allegiance to the Queen.</image:title>
<image:caption>Our Irishness was suppressed, deemed inappropriate or even disloyal. This denial of our heritage, this forced adoption of an identity that didn't resonate with me, was a form of oppression that hung heavy in the air. At 19, I escaped Northern Ireland, eager to distance myself from the tension and conflict. Each time I returned, I could feel the oppression as soon as I stepped off the plane, a palpable reminder of struggles that had marked my early years. I never looked forward to those visits.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Healing Ancestral Trauma through Sound and Ritual - But through my journey of healing and self-discovery, I found a way to reconnect with my Irish roots.</image:title>
<image:caption>When I play my drum, I hear the echoes of my ancestors, their stories resonating in each beat. I feel a deep connection to the land, to the rolling green hills, the magnificent trees, and the rugged coastlines. I liked the meditation about the light growing inside my heart and getting bigger and moving all around my body. It made me feel very relaxed and calm. I wanted to fall asleep! My body started to feel a little bit heavier too. I really love how the sound feels on my body. The vibrations are amazing. The bowls make me feel very comforted and warm.</image:caption>

<image:caption>After the second time, I did some drawing because I felt like doing some art. The next week at school, I was very excited about Maths. Usually I hate Maths! I love the visions I have during the sound therapy. They feel very real too! The first time, I was in a tunnel of sound and I saw pink and blue spirals spinning around. I felt very relaxed for ages after.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Nina’s story: how sound has enhanced my life - It’s relaxing, as well as energising</image:title>
<image:caption>The second time, my favourite sounds were the chimes. When they were playing, I was in the jungle and I saw a cheetah. The cheetah asked me to follow her and I went behind a waterfall into this big cave. All the other animals were there. A horse, a tiger, a snake and the cheetah’s family. My baby cousin was there too. It felt like it was the animal’s secret lair. I was also lying on a fluffy cloud in the sky. It felt really good. I was disappointed when I discovered that clouds are just air so this kind of makes up for it! Seeing all these things makes me feel calm and wild at the same time. It’s weird. But a good kind of weird!”</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Healing through sound: my journey - In 2022, I left a senior position in corporate communications to pursue my passion and become a sound healer. You might wonder how I went from managing the reputation of an organisation to working with sound to support people on their healing journeys. My dear friend Rhiannon has had front row seats during this transformation and was keen to understand more about my journey one recent Friday afternoon. And so here is the conversation we had about how I found wisdom through trauma, and starting sound healing.</image:title>

He was ambushed, shot and seriously wounded by the IRA when I was four, which caused him a lot of suffering, both mentally and physically.
